Is Metro Ethernet Passing New England By?

Less than a decade ago,
the region experienced a glut of startups attacking the metro
optical equipment market. The subsequent downturn of the
telecommunications industry changed that, and the ensuing recovery
gradually shifted focus from network infrastructure to service and
application delivery technologies.
But over the past year,
the metro network market has made a comeback as carrier Ethernet has
become a viable transport medium. And while the legacy of New
England's past innovations can still be seen in some of the Ethernet
equipment on the market, regional startups are absent from the
multibillion-dollar space.
The lack of startup
activity in the space, particularly within New England, is
surprising to Wade Appelman, the vice president of sales and
marketing for Waltham-based Lightstorm Networks Inc., which makes
chips for carrier Ethernet equipment....
A recent report by Boston-based analyst firm Vertical Systems
Group claimed that more than 80 service providers in the United
States, including incumbents, are delivering Ethernet services to
business customers, and that number is growing.
