When it comes to Ethernet
service, Windstream, like any incumbent service provider, advocates
fiber as the best medium. In fact, the Tier 2 service provider has a
robust Ethernet over fiber and MPLS network solution built with a
Juniper/Cisco-based IP/MPLS backbone and standard Ethernet optical
switches.
Still,
Windstream realizes that as compelling as fiber-based Ethernet
service solutions are, fiber reach is far from ubiquitous.
In fact,
research from Vertical Systems Group points out that only 13.4
percent of U.S.-based buildings are lit with fiber, leaving 86.6
percent of buildings without the ability to get Ethernet service.
