Throttle Down The Backhoe: Generating Ethernet Revenue Through Access
Evolution

It is time to look
beyond the backhoe for solutions to close the fiber gap that enable
carriers to realize Ethernet revenue along the way. The advent of
multi-service platforms means carriers can focus on systematic
migration and pay-as-you-grow strategies for accelerated ROI with
Ethernet Service deployments. With the ability to leverage -these
technologies and support any service over any media, carriers will
find themselves well positioned to capitalize on emerging service
revenue opportunities in the carrier Ethernet market.
Riding the Carrier Ethernet Wave
The global appetite for business
Ethernet services will reach a staggering $40.2 billion by 2014,
according to Vertical Systems Group and the Federal
Communication Commission’s “Connecting America” National Broadband
Plan calls for 100 Mb/s access in a minimum of 100 million homes
across the U.S. by the year 2020. With
this rising demand, however, comes a
tectonic shift – the migration from copper to fiber-based Ethernet –
that is challenging carriers to realize widespread change in their
infrastructure without choking off their revenue stream through
capital expenditures.
Revolution or Evolution
Most carriers today are providing Ethernet services through
multiple systems from disparate vendors specializing in delivery via
fiber, copper or Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) bonded circuits.
Although optical fiber deployment is gradually rising, primarily for
the large enterprise in high-density metro areas, the midmarket
fiber gap remains for small- and medium-sized businesses. While the
changeover from copper to fiber eventually produces long-term
benefits, the short-term infrastructure costs can significantly
impact revenues, operational abilities, and overall service
deployment velocity.
