2020 Global Provider Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD

Four LEADERBOARD position changes; AT&T and Colt retain top two ranks. Global Provider Ethernet installations dip as worldwide pandemic continues.

BOSTON, MA, March 16, 2021 – Vertical Systems Group announces that the following seven companies achieved a position on the 2020 Global Provider Ethernet LEADERBOARD (in rank order based on retail port share as of December 31, 2020): AT&T (U.S.), Colt (U.K.), Orange Business Services (France), Lumen (U.S.), Verizon (U.S.), BT Global Services (U.K.) and NTT (Japan). This industry benchmark for multinational Ethernet network market presence ranks companies that hold a 4% or higher share of billable retail ports at sites outside of their respective home countries.

For the 2020 Global Provider Challenge Tier, the following eight companies qualify (in alphabetical order): Cogent (U.S.), Global Cloud Xchange (India), GTT (U.S.), SingTel (Singapore), T-Systems (Germany), Tata Communications (India), Telefonica (Spain) and Vodafone (U.K.). The Challenge Tier includes companies with share between 2% and 4% of this defined market.

“The global Ethernet services market declined slightly in 2020 due to pandemic related factors such as supply chain disruptions, travel restrictions and widespread office vacancies,” said Rick Malone, principal of Vertical Systems Group. “We expect that demand for Ethernet bandwidth will rebound this year as multinational customers invest heavily in high-speed cloud and internet services for mission-critical applications.”

2020 Research Highlights

  • AT&T retains first position on the 2020 Global Provider Ethernet LEADERBOARD, followed by Colt in second position.
  • Four Global Service providers have new rank positions on this latest Ethernet LEADERBOARD based on year-end 2020 share results. Orange Business Services advances to third position, which moves Lumen (formerly CenturyLink) to fourth position. Verizon advances to fifth position, which shifts BT Global Services to sixth position.
  • The Global Provider Ethernet segment port base for year-end 2020 share calculations dipped slightly with a net decrease in installations. This follows double digit port growth in 2019 for the Global Provider segment.
  • Ethernet business has been appreciably impacted by the pandemic across many country markets, including Italy, Spain, U.K., Germany and Brazil.
  • Orange Business Services and Lumen are the only companies on the 2020 Global Provider LEADERBOARD that have attained MEF 3.0 Carrier Ethernet (MEF 3.0 CE) certification. Tata Communications, which is cited on the  2020 Challenge Tier, is also MEF 3.0 CE certified.

The Market Player tier includes all Global Providers with port share below 2%.
